Stern Room

Air Control Center on REQUIN

The last compartment seen on your virtual tour of REQUIN is the stern room. As you can see, this compartment seems to be quite spacious, as compared to the others.

The four torpedo tubes, which occupied this space when REQUIN was commissioned, were removed during REQUIN's conversion to a MIGRAINE II radar picket. Located in the forward part of the stern room were all of the radar consoles, display boards, and aerial plotting boards. (see the drawing at top left.)

The remaining space, previously occupied by the torpedo tubes themselves, was converted into extra berthing space.

In 1959, when REQUIN was converted to a fleet snorkel, all of the radar equipment was removed and the space converted into additional berthing. Many REQUIN vets have said that this was the best place to get a bunk.

The photograph at left center shows the stern room looking aft and the photograph at bottom left shows the stern room looking forward.
